We have just received word that the state has changed the date to begin reserving appliance rebates to April 7, 2010, 7 AM. The original start date was April 5, 2010.

The move was in response to consumer requests about the timing of the original date, coinciding with religious holiday plans and travel.

The Texas Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program program has begun, and we’ve put together a top 10 list of important items that Texans need to know before applying.

1 .When does it start?

The Texas Appliance Rebate Program officially begins on April 7, 2010*. (Update 4-1-2010, Reservation start date postponed to April 7, 2010 from April 5, 2010)

2. When does it end?

To Be Determined, waiting for additional information on the state’s website.

3. How exactly does the rebate program work?

Texas residents may apply for up to two rebates per address; however, each rebate must be for a different appliance category such as a freezer and a dishwasher but not two freezers.

The rebate payment will be mailed to your Texas address.

PURCHASE of the appliance(s) by Texas consumers must start no sooner than April 16, 2010 for refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers and room air conditioners, and the purchase period ends April 25, 2010 for these types of appliances. Because purchases may occur at the time of installation for central air conditioners, hot water heaters and air-source heat pumps, these products should be purchased between April 16, 2010 and up to 60 days from the rebate reservation or waitlist request date.

All appliances MUST be installed in your Texas residence, and the rebate form(s), copy of receipt and supporting documentation must be postmarked within 60 days from the rebate reservation or waitlist request date.

4.  Who is Eligible?

To qualify for the Trade Up Appliance Rebate Program you must be a Texas resident with a valid Texas residential address and satisfy all program rules.  You must replace an old, but functional appliance from the qualifying appliance list that includes refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, central air conditioners, air-source heat pumps, hot water heaters with a new ENERGY STAR or CEE qualified model from a Texas retail location or contractor, depending on the appliance. 10. Is there a bonus rebate for consumers who recycle their old appliances?

The state will be working with retailers and recycling facilities to create a system to help consumers replace functional old appliances and recycle them where available for $75 for each bonus rebate, for up to two qualifying appliances.  Details will be available on the rebate application and will require the appropriate documentation.  Recycling will not be required; however you will be required to submit evidence of proper disposal of the old, functional appliance.

The Texas Appliance Rebate program opens for rebate reservations on April 5, 2010 by phone or on-line.   A limited number of rebate reservations will be available at that time.  Texans can request to be on the rebate waiting list once reservations have closed. In the event additional funds become available, rebate applications for those on the waiting list will be processed in the order they are received. The same purchasing rules apply for waiting list participants.

Here’s how you can apply for your Appliance Rebate Application.

The purchase period begins April 16, 2010, and the rebate program ends when all funds are exhausted. All rebate applications are due postmarked within 60 days of the rebate reservation or waitlist request date.  At the time of the reservation request, you will be required provide your name, address and appliance. After providing this information, you will receive a rebate application form and will immediately know whether you have a reservation or a waitlist request.

What’s so special about ENERGY STAR anyway?

The Energy Star program was established by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U. S. Department of Energy. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR label an appliance must meet rigorous energy efficiency and water efficiency standards set by the Federal government, to save Americans money on their utility bills. The Energy Star program is one of the most important aspects of the Appliance Rebate Program.

Additional information regarding Energy Star appliances may be obtained from the following website: http://www.energystar.gov/

If you have any additional questions regarding whether an appliance is ENERGY STAR qualified, please feel free to contact the ENERGY STAR Hotline at: mailto:hotline@energystar.gov or 1.888.STAR.YES (1.888.782.7937).
